10 questions to ask before saying yes to a rishta

A good rishta conversation is respectful and honest. These questions help both families understand each other before taking the next step.

A rishta is not decided in one meeting. The best matches come from conversations where both people, and both families, ask what really matters. These ten questions help you understand someone's values and plans without making the conversation feel like an interview.

1. What role does deen play in your daily life?

Ask about salah, fasting, halal income and how they hope to practise faith as a family. Similar expectations here prevent many difficulties later.

2. What are you looking for in a spouse?

An open question lets them describe what they value: character, education, family background or temperament. Listen for what comes first.

3. Where do you see yourselves living after the nikah?

With parents, in a joint family, in another city or abroad? Location shapes careers and family life, so discuss it early.

4. How do you feel about work and careers after marriage?

Talk about both partners' plans. Agreement on work, study and household responsibilities avoids misunderstandings.

5. How involved will both families be?

Understand how decisions are made in each family and how much involvement each of you expects from parents and siblings.

6. What are your thoughts on children and parenting?

Whether and when to have children, and how you hope to raise them, are central questions for a lifelong partnership.

7. How do you handle money?

Discuss saving, spending, supporting parents and avoiding interest-based debt. Financial values matter as much as income.

8. How do you resolve disagreements?

Every couple disagrees. Ask how they handle stress and conflict, and who they turn to for advice.

9. What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

Shared interests are not everything, but knowing how someone spends their time tells you a lot about them.

10. Is there anything important I should know?

Give space for honesty about health, previous marriages or responsibilities. A respectful, unhurried question invites an honest answer.
